Glossary of Terms

Administrator: a professional whose job is to manage the affairs of a business, organization, or institution.  In early childhood education, an administrator is often the child care center director.

 

Articulation:  Refers to the agreement between one university with another/or others which allows a student to transfer from one school to another without the loss of many credits. 

 

Assistant Professor : an entry-level teaching position for which one usually needs a Ph.D. or other doctorate; a master's degree may suffice, especially at community colleges or in fields for which there is a terminal master's degree.

                            

Associate Professor: the mid-level teaching position, usually awarded (in the humanities and social sciences) after publication record, although the requirements vary considerably between institutions and departments.

 

Associate degree: An academic degree awarded by community colleges, junior colleges, business colleges and some bachelor's degree-granting colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study usually lasting two years.

 

Baccalaureate: educational qualification.

 

Bachelor degree: is usually an undergraduate academic degree awarded for a course or major that generally lasts for four or five years.

 

Certification: an official document that gives proof and details of an educational achievement in a specific area of training. 

 

Credential: a certificate, letter, or experience that qualifies a professional to do something in a specific area of training. 

 

Continuing Education Credit (CEU):  A CEU is a form of credit for continuing education or training.

 

Child Development Credential (CDA):  The CDA (Child Development Associate) Credential is a nationally recognized credential awarded to individuals who have demonstrated competency through both experience and education in working with young children ages 0-5. The CDA Credential is awarded to center based infant/toddler or preschool teachers and family child care providers.  Contact the Council for more information at 800-424-4310.

 

Credit hour: approximately 12 hours of class or contact time

 

Dean: the head of a division, faculty, college, or school in a university

 

ECE: Early Childhood Education

 

Financial Aid: funding intended to help students pay tuition or other costs, such as room and board, for education at a college or university.

 

Master’s degree: is an academic degree usually awarded for completion of a postgraduate (or graduate) course of one to three years in duration.

 

Professor: a senior position. It refers to a senior academic who holds a departmental chair, generally as head of the department, or a personal chair awarded specifically to that individual. Professors are qualified experts who may perform the following:

 

 

Quarter: Part of an academic year. A quarter lasts between 8 and 12 weeks, and there are typically three per year.

Semester:  Part of an academic year. Institutions often have two semesters (four-month terms,) in an academic year, each lasting between 15 and 18 weeks.

 

Tuition/fees: a fee charged for educational instruction

 

Transfer:  1.To move from one school/university to another.   2. To move credit hours from one school to another.

Transcript:  refers to a copy of a student's permanent academic record which usually means all courses taken, all grades received, all honors received and degrees conferred to a student.
