Question: Will there be another round of TANF funding for the 2007-2008 year? If so, when do you anticipate the deadline to submit grants?

Answer: Right now there are no TANF dollars for the Afterschool programs earmarked in the 2008 & 2009 biennial budget. The Director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and the Office for Budget and Management are currently developing the ODJFS Director's spending plan as to which programming will be funded with TANF dollars for Fiscal Years 2008 & 2009. Until this spending plan is finalized, there will not be a release for our Afterschool Programs. The Ohio Departments of Job and Family Services & Education understand the importance of the Afterschool Programs and will post any updates with this topic as the information is made available. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated as we work through this important issue.

[4-2-2007]

Question: Is there a set amount or percentage of the After School Program budget that can be appropriated for equipment? For example, if a District would like to purchase smart boards that engage a student's different learning styles, whether visual, auditory or kinesthetic, would this be permissable? The purchase of smart boards will allow the district to have a smart board available to elementary, middle, and high school levels. They will impact student learning long after the grant is over.

Answer: The purchase of this type of equipment is appropriate; however, each county contract will govern whether the purchase can be made via the approved budget.

Question: Is there an applicication and/or will there be TANF funds available for school readiness programs for the summer of 2007?

Answer: There will not be a new Fiscal Year 2008 TANF Afterschool and School Readiness Enrichment Program application until Governor Strickland's FY08/09 budget has been approved. This should be in place prior to July 1, 2007 with an application process beginning mid-April should the funding be made available. There most likely will be only one grant cycle per year from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

Question: Our district is interested in applying for funding for our summer school program. Could you tell me where I can read about the requirements for summer programs and how to apply?

Answer: Last year's summer grant application is posted on the OCCRRA.org website for your review. There will not be a new Fiscal Year 2008 TANF Afterschool and School Readiness Enrichment Program application until Governor Strickland's FY08/09 budget has been approved. This should be in place prior to July 1, 2007 with an application process beginning mid-April should the funding be made available. There most likely will be only one grant cycle per year from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. If you have any additional questions, please let me know.
